Talking About Your Daily Life

Über den Alltag sprechen

AFTER THIS UNIT, YOU CAN

  • Describe a typical day from morning to night, in the right order.

  • Use separable verbs correctly in everyday sentences (aufstehen, anfangen, einkaufen).

  • Use common reflexive verbs (sich duschen, sich anziehen, sich entspannen).

  • Say how often you do something, using frequency words in the right position.

der Alltag · aufstehen · sich duschen · frühstücken · pendeln · die Mittagspause · einkaufen · der Feierabend · sich entspannen · gewöhnlich · selten

Useful phrases in this unit

Normalerweise stehe ich um … Uhr auf. · Ich habe selten Zeit für … . · Nach der Arbeit … .

Lesson 1 — Learn

The words below describe an ordinary day: getting up, getting to work, and winding down in the evening. Learn them as short chunks, not single words — German verbs behave differently depending on what surrounds them, and you will see that clearly in Lesson 2.

German English Example sentence
der Alltag everyday life, routine Mein Alltag ist ziemlich ruhig.
aufstehen to get up Ich stehe um sieben Uhr auf.
sich duschen to shower (oneself) Ich dusche mich jeden Morgen.
sich anziehen to get dressed Er zieht sich schnell an.
frühstücken to have breakfast Wir frühstücken zusammen.
das Frühstück breakfast Das Frühstück ist um acht Uhr fertig.
pendeln to commute Ich pendle jeden Tag nach Köln.
zur Arbeit fahren to go to work (by transport) Ich fahre mit dem Zug zur Arbeit.
anfangen to start, begin Die Arbeit fängt um neun Uhr an.
aufhören to stop, finish Ich höre um siebzehn Uhr auf.
die Mittagspause lunch break Die Mittagspause dauert eine Stunde.
einkaufen to go shopping Ich kaufe nach der Arbeit ein.
kochen to cook Meistens koche ich selbst.
das Abendessen dinner, evening meal Wir essen um sieben Uhr Abendessen.
sich entspannen to relax Am Abend entspanne ich mich.
fernsehen to watch television Wir sehen selten fern.
ins Bett gehen to go to bed Ich gehe meistens um elf ins Bett.
gewöhnlich usually Gewöhnlich bin ich um sechs wach.
normalerweise normally Normalerweise arbeite ich bis fünf.
meistens mostly, usually Meistens gehe ich zu Fuß.
selten rarely Ich koche selten am Wochenende.
nie never Ich stehe nie vor sechs auf.
jeden Tag every day Ich lerne jeden Tag Deutsch.
am Wochenende at the weekend Am Wochenende schlafe ich länger.
unter der Woche during the week / on weekdays Unter der Woche habe ich wenig Zeit.

A NOTE ON PRONUNCIATION

The letter combination "ei" in words like Feierabend and Arbeit is pronounced like the English "eye", not like "ay". Say the word slowly the first few times: Fei-er-a-bend.

Lesson 2 — Understand

Separable verbs (trennbare Verben)

Several verbs you just learned — aufstehen, anfangen, aufhören, einkaufen, fernsehen — are built from a prefix plus a base verb. In a simple present-tense sentence, the prefix breaks away from the verb and moves to the very end of the clause.

German English Example sentence
ich stehe … auf I get up Ich stehe um sieben Uhr auf.
du stehst … auf you get up Du stehst spät auf.
er/sie/es steht … auf he/she/it gets up Sie steht früh auf.
wir stehen … auf we get up Wir stehen zusammen auf.
ihr steht … auf you (pl.) get up Ihr steht zu spät auf!
sie/Sie stehen … auf they/you (formal) get up Sie stehen um acht auf.

REMEMBER

The prefix always goes to the end of the main clause — even if other words come in between. "Ich fange um neun Uhr mit der Arbeit an" is correct; the an of anfangen still lands last.

Reflexive verbs (reflexive Verben)

Verbs like sich duschen, sich anziehen, and sich entspannen need a reflexive pronoun that matches the subject. The pronoun usually comes right after the verb.

German English Example sentence
ich dusche mich I shower Ich dusche mich um sieben.
du duschst dich you shower Duschst du dich morgens?
er/sie/es duscht sich he/she/it showers Er duscht sich schnell.
wir duschen uns we shower Wir duschen uns nacheinander.
ihr duscht euch you (pl.) shower Duscht ihr euch abends?
sie/Sie duschen sich they/you (formal) shower Sie duschen sich morgens.

Word order: where do time expressions go?

A time expression (um sieben Uhr, am Morgen, jeden Tag) most naturally sits either right after the verb, at the very front of the sentence for emphasis, or before a place. Compare:

Ich stehe jeden Tag um sieben Uhr auf.

Jeden Tag stehe ich um sieben Uhr auf. (same meaning, extra emphasis on "every day")

COMMON MISTAKE

Learners often put the time expression at the very end, copying English word order: Ich stehe auf um sieben Uhr. This sounds foreign in German — the separable prefix belongs at the end, not the time.

Frequency words: where do they go?

Frequency adverbs (immer, meistens, oft, manchmal, selten, nie) usually stand directly after the verb (or after the subject–verb pair), before other details.

Ich koche selten am Wochenende. — not: Ich koche am Wochenende selten.

Lesson 3 — Practise

4. kauft / nach der Arbeit / er / ein

5. gehen / meistens / wir / um elf / Bett / ins

Lisa: Na, wie war dein Wochenende?

So, how was your weekend?

Mehmet: Ganz ruhig, danke. Und deins?

Pretty quiet, thanks. And yours?

Lisa: Auch gut. Sag mal, wie sieht eigentlich dein Alltag unter der Woche aus?

Good too. Tell me, what does your weekday routine actually look like?

Mehmet: Ziemlich normal. Ich stehe um sechs Uhr auf, dusche mich, und frühstücke schnell.

Pretty normal. I get up at six, shower, and have a quick breakfast.

Lisa: Und dann pendelst du zur Arbeit?

And then you commute to work?

Mehmet: Genau, mit der Bahn. Die Fahrt dauert ungefähr vierzig Minuten.

Exactly, by train. The journey takes about forty minutes.

Lisa: Und wann fängt deine Arbeit an?

And when does your work start?

Mehmet: Um neun. Ich habe meistens um eins eine kurze Mittagspause.

At nine. I usually have a short lunch break at one.

Lisa: Und was machst du nach Feierabend?

And what do you do after work?

Mehmet: Meistens kaufe ich schnell ein und koche etwas. Am Abend entspanne ich mich einfach.

Mostly I do a quick shop and cook something. In the evening I just relax.

UNIT 2

Making Plans and Arrangements

Pläne machen und sich verabreden

AFTER THIS UNIT, YOU CAN

  • Suggest doing something and respond to a suggestion, positively or negatively.

  • Arrange a time and place to meet someone, and confirm the details.

  • Talk about future plans using werden + infinitive.

  • Cancel, postpone, or confirm an arrangement politely.

Key vocabulary in this unit

sich verabreden · vorschlagen · Lust haben · sich treffen · einladen · zusagen · absagen · verschieben · passen · frei haben

Useful phrases in this unit

Hast du Lust, … ? · Das passt mir gut. · Können wir das verschieben?

Lesson 1 — Learn

Arranging to meet someone is one of the most common things you'll do in German outside of work: with friends, colleagues, or even a craftsman coming to fix something. These words let you propose, accept, decline, and adjust plans naturally.

German English Example sentence
sich verabreden to arrange to meet Wir verabreden uns für Samstag.
der Vorschlag suggestion, proposal Das ist ein guter Vorschlag.
vorschlagen to suggest Ich schlage ein Café vor.
Lust haben (auf) to feel like (doing something) Hast du Lust auf Kino?
sich treffen to meet (each other) Wir treffen uns um sechs.
einladen to invite Ich lade dich zum Essen ein.
die Einladung invitation Danke für die Einladung!
zusagen to accept, confirm (an invitation) Ich sage gern zu.
absagen to decline, cancel Ich muss leider absagen.
verschieben to postpone Können wir es verschieben?
der Termin appointment, arranged time Ich habe schon einen Termin.
passen to suit, be convenient Passt es dir am Freitag?
frei haben to be free, have time off Ich habe am Montag frei.
beschäftigt sein to be busy Sie ist diese Woche sehr beschäftigt.
vielleicht maybe, perhaps Vielleicht klappt es am Sonntag.
bestimmt definitely, surely Ich komme bestimmt.
wahrscheinlich probably Ich bin wahrscheinlich pünktlich.
übermorgen the day after tomorrow Übermorgen habe ich Zeit.
nächste Woche next week Nächste Woche passt es besser.
in zwei Tagen in two days Ich melde mich in zwei Tagen.

A NOTE ON POLITENESS

Declining an invitation directly ("Nein.") can sound abrupt in German. Softening it with leider ("unfortunately") — Ich kann leider nicht — is standard and expected, even among friends.

Lesson 2 — Understand

Talking about the future: werden + infinitive

German often uses the present tense with a future time word to talk about plans (Ich treffe ihn morgen). But when you want to state an intention or prediction more explicitly, use werden + infinitive, with the infinitive at the end of the clause.

German English Example sentence
ich werde … kommen I will come Ich werde später kommen.
du wirst … kommen you will come Wirst du auch kommen?
er/sie/es wird … kommen he/she/it will come Sie wird um acht da sein.
wir werden … kommen we will come Wir werden pünktlich sein.
ihr werdet … kommen you (pl.) will come Werdet ihr uns besuchen?
sie/Sie werden … kommen they/you (formal) will come Sie werden es bestimmt schaffen.
